My father recieved a letter containing a check for 4800.00 with the claim that he had won an international lottery pooled from a computer generated drawing list. The name on the letter is Focus Financial Group and located in Canada. He had me to check it out for him because he wasn't sure if it was a scam or not. Immediately I knew it was but I looked it up on google and got hits for a legit business by the same name. Point of the story is. #1 look out for your older parents or relatives because often they don't question things like this and are more willing to believe the scam and become victims. #2 The scammers are getting smarter by hiding behind legit business names so people like me look it up and come across what looks like real legit companies. Unless you are smart enough to dig deeper for info, the gullible people become victims as well. And my last comment How do you report crimes like this? As smart as I think I am I have no idea who to report this to, the police or to the banks?

I was almost scammed by julie duffy and her supposed solicitor Jonathan Goldring. Two liars, professional bsers, thieves and con men/women. Hopefully the authorities will catch up with these two soon and throw away the key. They are disgusting. When they get their reward it will be like a sledgehammer between the eyes. It won't be sweet.

It shocks me (and scares me a little) that anyone these days would even question that these emails are a scam. I get them almost every day (I've seen most of the ones mentioned in this discussion), and they come in many different forms: apparent lottery winnings, someone wealthy with no family dies and leaves you their inheritance, etc. Have no doubt in your mind - EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM IS A SCAM.

As soon as you give out that personal information, your identity is as good as stolen - and make no mistake, this can RUIN THE REST OF YOUR LIFE. And for what? Because someone you don't know, from a supposed entity you don't know, claims to have money for you and asks for all of your information. As enticing as some of the emails might sound, large sums of money are not handed out for no reason, unless you have purchased a lotto ticket and got lucky, appeared on a game show, or other RARE instances. Notice, however, that in these rare instances, the individual has KNOWINGLY participated before winning anything.

If ANYONE, by email, phone, mail, or whatever other mode of contact, asks for your personal information, NEVER give it out. If any company or individual is trying to contact you that is actually credible and has a legit reason for contacting you, they will not ask for this information. The fact that people can be duped by these emails is the reason they are still sent out - so PLEASE either delete them, or report them as spam to whoever provides your email service, or whatever security software you have installed.

Good luck everyone, and please be careful.
