i received a letter from international lottery inc saying i won 40,000 dollars and need to pay the federal and state taxes on it before i get the money. they will send me the check out of the 40,000 to pay the tax then i send it back to them then they send me back 36,000 dollars is this how it works

I have recieve a scam letter that said I won 60,000 usd dollars. They sent a check with it and it look official and so I did deposite in my checking account and come to find out it is counterfeit luckily for me I did not end up sending any money to them but I want others to beware of this scam.

well i just got a letter saying i won in the international mega lotto and i got a check for 2900 and was told to cash it and send 2600 to an atlanta ga address. i am now turning the letter and check over to the bank.

On October 6, 2006 I received a Certificate Of Award from the IRISH LOTTERY stating that I was a third place winner in the IRISH LOTTERY with the winnings to be a lump sum of $56,000 in cash. Along with the letter was a check in the amount of $2954.43, which the letter stated "Kindly deposit or cash the check to pay for your tax and clearance fee".
Never winning anything, of course I was excited so I called the number, which was 418-261-6550 and spoke with a woman for over 15 minutes verifying address, reference #, winner #, etc.
She explained to me that I should deposit or cash the check for $2,954.43 and take it to a Western Union and send it to: Tracy Simmons

She then stated that once the transfere was made, that I should immediately call the phone number above and give them the reference number showing that the transfere was made and that I would have my total cash winnings withing 48 hours, even stated that the total winnings was $56,000, and that the amount of the check would be deducted from that and also $5,600 for their sponsor fee, and said that I would receive $47,446.00 after these deductions. Still sounded good.
The next morning before I went to the bank with the check I call the bank that the check was drawn on which was CHASE. She verified that the checking account was open and that the account number was valid, but the she also advised me that a lot of scams have been going around like this and that I probably should not cash the check.
Because the money was suppose to be transfered to Canada, I then called the bank to find out what the current exchange rate from US to Canadian to find out that it is 1.3560. Now, if you take that and multiply if times the check amount of $2954.43 that would mean you would have to add $1,051.77 to that check amount that would mean you would have to Western Union $4,163.20, this means you're already out of $1,051.77, not to mention it would cost $157.00 for the Western Union fee. Of couse, by now, I knew something wasn't right so I decided to make another phone call to the number they provided. Before calling the number, I called the operator to find out the fee's for calling, only to find out that this number 418-261-6550 was an international number to Quibec, but you wouldn't know it to look at it. I then ask the rates for the call it was $5.94 for first minute and $1.44 each additional. That was almost $25 for the phone call I made to them, NOW we know it's fake, but you can't do anything about it I did report it to the police and also to the BBB, we live, we learn. The check was drawn from Jewish Community Centers of Chicago, 30 South Wells Street, Suite 4000 Chicago, Illinois 60606. Doesn't say much for them does it.
Just be careful, always be skeptical because if you didn't play the game you can't win, we both know that.
