BMW has been the victim of an internet scam claiming it is offering cash prizes or cars.

The company has put out a statement warning that emails headed 'International Awareness Promotion Department of the BMW Automobile Company' are fake and not part of a bonafide marque campaign.

“We are aware that there are a number of similar emails in circulation and we are currently investigating how to prevent those responsible from using BMW's name in such a way,” said Richard Price, its customer service manager.
