Child porn: the doctor admits his guilt

A former trainee neurosurgeon at the Monash Medical Centre has received a suspended jail sentence after admitting having more than 1400 images of child pornography.

Abraham Stephanopoulos, 33, of Armadale, was charged last September after the images were found on a hospital computer and one at his home.

Police found 1405 images depicting naked children between the ages of eight and 14 and others wear- ing bathing suits. They also found five video clips of children and the addresses of child porn websites.

Stephanopoulos pleaded guilty in the Dandenong Magistrates Court to three charges of knowingly possessing child pornography.

The Medical Practitioners Board of Victoria is expected to hold its own inquiry into the allegations.

Terry Forrest, QC, for the doctor, said Stephanopoulos viewed the images out of curiosity and was not a pedophile. He had been working almost 100 hours a week and lost his social life. Looking at porn had become his "outlet".

One witness said the allegations had destroyed the reputation of the doctor and his family in the city's Greek Cypriot community.
