The Internet is no longer the friendly meeting place it once was -- the dangers that lurk within its precincts are intensifying.

"The Internet is becoming pretty much the bad part of town," Vancouver cybersecurity expert James Crooks told The Province on Tuesday.

"You can't trust what's going on out there. It's like -- would you go down to the bad part of town and make change for some guy's $100 bill? Probably not," he said.

Crooks was reacting to the news that cyberattacks on large Canadian corporations are on the rise.
