Russian cybercrime statistics

According to the Infiormation center of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation, 13723 computer crimes were committed in Russia last year. It makes a twofold increase over the previous number of 7052 cyber crimes in 2003.

These crimes were committed in violation of the following articles of the Russian criminal code.

1. Unlawful access to computer information - 8002 crimes.

2. Creation, use and distribution of malware or machine carriers with such programs - 1079.

3. Violation of operation rules of computers, computer systems or networks - 11.

4. Copyright and adjacent rights violation - 528.

Total losses from these crimes amounted to $8,367,595.

In the course of investigation, police distressed property of suspects totaling $6,331,609 in order to cover losses of the victims.

5. Fraud – 371.

6. Causing property damage by false pretences or abuse of trust – 2892.

7. Illegal entrepreneurship – 5.

8. Illegal obtaining and divulging of information constituting commercial, taxation and bank secrets – 480.

9. Manufacture and sale of forged credit or payment cards – 1616.

Total losses caused owing to these crimes amounted to $801,751

In the course of investigation of these crimes, police distressed property of suspects totaling $1,136,656 in order to cover losses of the victims.

10. Illegal distribution of porn materials and items – 335.

11. Illegal distribution of porn materials and items containing child porn – 13.
