Lottery scams

Date: February 25, 2007

Barbara Brownell received some good news in the mail the other day.

"I just won the German lottery," she said with a laugh, noting that she received a letter and a check from the lottery company.

She laughs about the scenario, not because she's happy to be a winner but because she knows the prize isn't real.

But as an advocate for the Older Adult Crime Victim Program of REAL Services in South Bend, Brownell knows all too well that some people who receive these types of letters can't see through the ploy.

And seniors can be especially vulnerable.
