FIVE doctors convicted of downloading child porn are free to work in the NHS.

Astonishingly four who were suspended by the General Medical Council have had the bar lifted, though three remain on the sex offenders' register.

The three include consultant Charles Bartlett, 51, who downloaded 1,600 images of children and consultant Adrian Catterall, 44, who had pictures of youngsters being tortured.

A fifth doctor who downloaded more than 3,800 images was never even barred.

The GMC urges its watchdog "fitness to practise" panels to strike off all doctors caught with child porn unless there are exceptional circumstances.

But medics and lay people on the panels are ignoring the plea. Child protection charity Kidscape said yesterday: "This is horrifying. There should be no loopholes.
