With computer viruses and phishing having evolved to organized crime practiced by well-paid hackers who siphon off and then sell your vital information, it's more necessary than ever to protect your computer from intrusion.

Security experts say using "street smarts" when traveling around the Web can be as important as installing and regularly updating security software.

Just as you need to be wary of overly friendly strangers when walking down a dimly lit street, you need to be cautious about e-mails and Web sites that offer free downloads or ask you to follow their advice and click on links.

"On the Internet, if it's free, it's usually not," warned Marc Solomon, director of product management for McAfee Inc., a Santa Clara-based security-software maker.
