Kiwibank targeted by scams

Date: December 11, 2005
Source: STUFF

Kiwibank customers today became the latest targets of an internet "phishing" scam.

Bogus e-mails were sent to Kiwibank customers, directing them to a fraudulent site similar to the bank's own website.

The website was misspelt as www.kiwibahk.co.nz, Kiwibank spokesman Bruce Thompson said.

Kiwibank became aware of the problem at about 4am and was currently working to shut the fraudulent site down, Mr Thompson said.

About 160,000 Kiwibank customers are registered with internet banking.

Mr Thompson said most people were fairly savvy about these scams, which have hit several New Zealand banks since 2003.
