Britons are adopting a lax attitude to online security, with nearly half of victims of internet fraud not even realising that they have had money stolen from their bank account.

People using unsecure websites to purchase goods or falling for phishing scams are helping to fuel a burgeoning online fraud industry.

Research from Mastercard found that two thirds of people believe online fraud is something that will only happen to other people and don't take the necessary precautions.

The warning comes as a separate Mintel study showed that record numbers of consumers will shop online for gifts this Christmas.

Two fifths of shoppers will avoid the cold and crowds to buy their presents online, up by a quarter on 2001.
