Dalai Lama computer virus

Date: October 05, 2007
Source: The Inquirer

Sophos is warning users about a virus attached to an email disguised as a message of support from the Dalai Lama to monks and protesters in crisis-torn Myanmar.

According to Sophos' report, the email contains the following text:

“Dear Friends &Colleagues,
Please find enclosed a message from His Holiness the Dalai Lama in support of the recent pro democracy demonstrations taking place in Burma. This is for your information and can be distributed as you see fit.

Best wishes,
Tenzin Taklha
Joint Secretary
Office of His Holiness the Dalai Lama”

When users open the attached document (filename: hhdl burma_001.doc), it then attempts to exploit a vulnerability in Microsoft Word, which in turn tries to download a Trojan horse onto the victim's PC.
