John Letterhos is a special agent in the bureau’s Charlotte field office. He told about 90 students at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke how browsing the Internet and filling out credit card applications could jeopardize personal information, such as Social Security numbers or addresses.
“Me and my wife don’t get checks mailed to us anymore. We pick them up from the bank,” Letterhos said. “You never know who can go in your mailbox.”
Letterhos has worked as an investigator in the FBI’s financial crimes section for about six years. That section spends most of its time tracking groups that operate internationally from places such as Nigeria or Romania.
