From a California senator to a computer hacker, it was a strange dare: Steal my Capitol security code, if you can.

Using a little laptop, the hacker quickly skimmed from Sen. Joe Simitian's plastic identification card the data needed to enter the garage for state lawmakers and the Capitol itself after closing hours.

At Simitian's invitation, the hacker later slung his briefcase over one shoulder and proceeded to steal similar information from nine other people in Capitol hallways, elevators or lunch lines.
