Most people know about the potential dangers on the internet, but Cary's new crime unit will also look for a new kind of criminal -- one that uses the latest technology.

When Cary youth minister Jeffrey Smith was arrested and pleaded guilty to e-mailing nude pictures of children last year, Cary police needed state investigators to help with the case.

Thanks to a new cyber crime unit comprised of two officers, the department will soon be able to tackle the tough cases on its own. The town will spend $225,000 on special computer software and equipment that can find sexual predators lurking online.
