US police have arrested 39 people in New Jersey charged with the possession of internet video clips showing the rape of a five-year-old girl.

The arrests, made from January 17 to January 27, were made using new technology that can detect child pornography on the internet and trace those images to the personal computers they are stored on.

"We will prosecute anyone who knowingly downloads from the internet and circulates images of children who are being sexually exploited," Attorney General Peter Harvey said in a statement.

"Through technology and training we are constantly enhancing our ability to do just that."

Those arrested range in age from 14 to 61 and include a high-school hockey coach, a lawyer and a paediatric neurosurgeon.

James Bidwell, the man in the act of molesting and raping the five-year-old girl, was convicted in 2002 for sending videotapes of his crimes via the internet to Canada and England and is now serving a 45-year prison term.
