SPY KID hackers

Anyone accessing the Web sites for the cities of El Cerrito, Albany or Alameda overnight saw a cryptic message instead of the usual home pages.

The message "SPY KID OWNS YOUR SYSTEM" was the work of an unknown hacker, according to Oakland-based firm Infolane, which provides Web site services to those cities as well as other governmental agencies.

"Although embarrassing for us, no real harm was done," said Infolane President David Hillstrom in a statement. "We are much chagrined to have been broken into, and are taking the matter very seriously, but our backup files enabled us to recover quickly from the event.

"The hacker, who claimed to be from Brazil, was up to mischief but did no lasting harm."

Infolane was hacked around 12:30 a.m., and the problem was fixed about nine hours later. Several business Web sites were affected as well.
