Computer predators threat

Date: August 15, 2006

What happens when you combine a computer nerd with a pedophile? According to Canada's top cybercops, you get the high-tech predator, one of the most ominous threats to children today.

Some secretly spy on children's bedrooms by hacking into their webcams. Others set up temporary, untraceable websites full of downloadable child porn that are swapped, as one officer puts it, "like hockey cards."

Many who assume aliases are so fluent in the cyberlanguage of teens that they're impossible to tell from the real thing.

And then there are those who hijack e-mail accounts using personal information about children they've gathered on-line, then blackmail victims into posing nude for pictures, or worse.
