Be protected from cybercrime

During March, Waterloo Regional Police, in partnership with the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre, the Ontario Provincial Police and municipal police services, are participating in Fraud Prevention Month.

The theme for this year’s campaign is Preventing On-Line Fraud.

Fraud Prevention Month creates an opportunity to raise awareness about the growth of cybercrime, as well as identify ways in which the public can work in partnership with police agencies to reduce the likelihood of becoming a victim.

In Waterloo Region, complaints connected to online activity constitute approximately 20 per cent of fraud investigations.

The most common types of cybercrime investigated by Waterloo Regional Police include the apartment rental scam, the dating scam and the computer virus scam.

Approximately 15 per cent of locally investigated cybercrime involved identity theft. To reduce the likelihood of someone fraudulently using identities, police urge the public to ensure they report lost wallets and valuables and shred documents containing personal, financial or sensitive information.
