New hacker tricks

Business owners and managers: Have you checked your full voice-mail system recently?

It's one of those business tools that most of us take for granted until something goes wrong. And things can certainly go wrong if we don't pay attention. For instance? Hackers.

Hackers are using business voice mail systems to make collect calls without the knowledge or permission of employers. Victims generally don't know about the attack until a huge phone bill arrives.

Here's how it works:

A phone hacker calls into a voice mail system and searches for voice mailboxes that still have default passwords with easily guessed combinations. A knowledgeable hacker uses the passwords to access the phone system and change outgoing greetings to "Yes, operator, I will accept the charges." With a little additional technical magic, the automated telephone system used to place international calls is now accepting any inbound collect call.

While your business telephone system is working away for you during the day, it is working for a telephone hacker at night.
