Senior gardai will meet representatives of consumer bodies on Tuesday to discuss ways of tackling fraud more efficiently.

Internet fraud such as ‘‘skimming’’ - the use of an electronic stripe reader that records information stored on credit and debit cards - and the identification of at least 20 gangs running fraud operations has prompted the groups to consider more ways to deal with the problem.

Members of the Garda Bureau of Fraud Investigation, the Office of the Director of Consumer Affairs and the Northern Office of Fair Trade will meet in Malahide to assess cross-border trends relating to fraud and ways of combating elaborate scams.

A senior fraud detective said he hoped the roll-out of chip-and-pin on credit cards last weekend would reduce fraud, but said there were still areas where the public were vulnerable.
