Spain's Battle Against Online Child Pornography Yields 121 Suspects

Madrid, Spain (AHN) - Spain's largest operation against online child pornography yielded a large catch of 121 people. Aside from the arrests, Spanish police confiscated from the 121 suspects millions of lewd images showing children engaged in sex, disclosed Manuel Vasquez, the country's national police chief.

The operation against the network of the Internet pornographers included 75 countries. Aside from the 121 arrested, 96 people were charged by the Spanish police with possession and distribution of child pornography.

The arrests were done the past week. The police operation was initiated in July 2007, with assistance from Brazilian police. It involved 800 police officials who conducted 210 searches in 42 Spanish provinces which led to the seizure of 347 hard drives, 1,186 CDs and DVDs and 36 laptops.

Those arrested include bank clerks, porters, airline pilots, taxi drivers, school cleaners and even foreigners. With the 121 arrested the past seven days, the total number of people detained in Spain for child porno the past five years has reached 1,200.
