An 18-year-old Dania Beach man faces dozens of child pornography charges after detectives say his personal computer had images of children having sex.

Alexander Charles Whitaker was being held in the Broward County Jail Friday on $300,000 bond. Nona Carriveau, who had been renting a room to Whitaker in her trailer in the 900 block of North Federal Highway, discovered the pictures on Whitaker's computer July 2, according to the Broward Sheriff's Office.

The two had an argument July 30, after which Whitaker went to jail for wandering through a nearby shopping center with a kitchen knife. A few days later, Carriveau found the pornographic images and called BSO.

Investigators from BSO and the Law Enforcement Against Child Harm Task Force interviewed Whitaker in jail and got written consent from him to examine the contents of his computer, BSO spokesman Hugh Graf said.

They found hundreds of child pornography images stored in various files and folders, Graf said. Many of the images showed children having sexual contact with other children or adults, he said.

Whitaker was released from jail on the weapons charge July 28. Investigators arrested him again Aug. 5 and charged him with 30 counts of possession of child pornography. Additional charges against Whitaker may be pending, Graf said.

Broward Sheriff's Office detectives are asking that anyone with information on the case call 954-888-5240.
