Cyberspace: to buy or not to buy

Lorella Praeli will never forget the nasty instant messages that kept popping up on her home computer when she was a middle school student in New Milford. The ones that called her "peg-leg" and "border-hopper."

Praeli, a native of Peru who lost a leg in a car accident when she was 2, said she tried to ignore the insults, but she would be lying if she said they didn't hurt.

The weeklong barrage of messages — and the fact she couldn't stop them — made her angry.

"As much as I wanted to avoid it, bullying has an impact on you," said Praeli, now a 19-year-old student at Quinnipiac University. "When someone says 'peg-leg' or 'border-hopper,' those kinds of words stick with you forever."
