NEW DELHI : A software engineer, Sandeep Jain (28), has been arrested for allegedly outraging the modesty of a female colleague in his office.
According to the police, Jain sent obscene mails to the victim, used her e-mail account to send sleazy mails to her colleagues and even physically assaulted her in a market in Punjabi Bagh.
According to the police, Jain wanted to marry the victim and he had started misbehaving with her after she rejected his offer of marriage.
"Jain, who is an IIT alumni, used to commute with her to their office in Noida. He soon started pestering her for marriage. We arrested him after he assaulted the woman," said deputy commissioner of police (crime) Dependra Pathak.
Both the accused and the victim are residents of Pitampura in northwest Delhi .
"He even sent his parents to her home to discuss their wedding with her parents. Things, however, did not work out the way Jain wanted and he could not take the rejection in his stride. He then went out of his way to malign her," said an officer.
The accused then allegedly started sending obscene letters to her.
He is said to have even hacked her password and sent obscene mails to her colleagues in the office.
"He is obviously a computer wizard and managed to send and receive mails on her behalf," said the officer, adding that the accused would also be booked under the IT Act 2000.
The woman complained to the police after she was assaulted by Jain in a Punjabi Bagh market. Jain is said to have followed her to the market where he got physically violent with her. He allegedly pushed her aside and also beat her up.
A case of outraging the modesty of a woman and criminal intimidation has been registered against him in the Punjabi Bagh police station. The accused has been released on bail.
In another incident of cyber crime, a 32-year-old woman in southwest Delhi was sent a series of mails by a man asking her to either pose in nude or pay Rs 1 lakh to him. He threatened her that he would put up her morphed pictures on sex websites.
