Mozilla vs Microsoft

Date: September 18, 2005

New York - Mozilla, a non-profit company with just 16 employees, is stealing chunks of the internet browsing market away from Microsoft with its increasingly popular Firefox browser, Businessweek reports.

According to a survey released in January from WebSideStory, a website analytics firm, Mozilla's Firefox browser grabbed 4.6% share in six months and appears well on its way to reaching its goal of 10% market share.

Meanwhile, Microsoft's Internet Explorer slipped 4.9 percentage points to 90.6% - its lowest figure in 3 years.

Analysts say that if Firefox and other non-Microsoft browsers continue to gain market share, those 15% of websites that aren't completely compatible with non-Microsoft browsers could be forced to redesign their sites to comply with open standards.
