Internet scam targets social security

Date: November 14, 2006

Federal officials recently issued a warning about a new wave of e-mail scams purporting to be from Social Security Administration officials who then demand personal financial and credit card information.

The e-mails sometimes have the subject `Cost-of-Living for 2007 update` and contain the following threat: `NOTE: We now need you to update your personal information. If this is not completed by November 11, 2006, we will be forced to suspend your account indefinitely.`

The e-mail directs an unsuspecting person to visit another Web site, which appears to be the Social Security Web site. An individual is asked to register for a password by providing private details.
