Britain under hacker attack

Scotland Yard today issued an urgent warning that Britain was under a mass attack by hackers.

Thousands of homes have been targeted by an organised crime gang using computers based in the US.

Detectives from the Met's Computer Crime Unit are working with the FBI. Police say the virus code known as a 'backdoor' is being used to target computer passwords, credit card numbers, financial data and email addresses.

So far, officers have identified 2,300 computers which have been infected by the virus, but officers believe the real number will be much higher. One source said: 'We are talking thousands, possibly tens of thousands, of computers which have been hit by this virus.'
