The mention of “Nigeria” in Internet messages has been enough recently to send up red flags in many people’s minds concerning scams. But the words of warning clearly haven’t made their way to everyone.

Investigator Bob Moeser of the Unicoi County Sheriff’s Department last week recovered several thousand dollars worth of merchandise purchased with stolen credit card information and earmarked for delivery to a man in the African nation.

Sheriff Kent Harris explained that discovery of the items stemmed from a report by a Flag Pond man that his credit/debit card had been used twice without permission. Nine other attempts to charge purchases to the card had been unsuccessful.

Using the account number, Moeser was able to determine that the merchandise had been sent to the address of a woman in nearby Madison County, N.C.
