Gateway to fraud

Gateway Inc.’s former finance chief and its controller manipulated earnings in 2000, a federal jury ruled Thursday. The jury in San Diego found former finance chief John Todd and former controller Robert Manza liable in the lawsuit filed by the Securities and Exchange Commission. Gateway, the third-largest U.S. personal computer maker, settled with the SEC in 2003.

Internet phone clash

Vonage Holdings Corp. must pay $58 million plus monthly royalties to Verizon Communications Inc. for infringing on patents on Internet telephone service, a federal jury ruled Thursday. Verizon accused Vonage of using its inventions for billing, voice mail and other services.
