Police believe a threatening e-mail sent to an employee of Carlisle Machine Works, Inc. on Wade Boulevard was the result of an Internet scam to obtain thousands of dollars from the man.

But the victim, Frank Dougherty, 44, of West Main Street, told police the unknown sender could also have been a Mays Landing resident, with whom he has legal issues.

Police said Tuesday the e-mail, sent to Dougherty's work account Friday, May 4, stated that if he didn't pay $30,000 within the next two days he would be killed.

It also stated if he contacted police, his family would be killed.

The message was sent from Mr. No Name I am Sorry via a Gmail account.
