Cybercrime The Australian Bankers' Association (ABA) has defended the security of Internet banking, despite the prevalence of online scams.

Most of the major banks in Australia have been targeted by email scams, in which customers are sent emails directing them to "ghost" bank websites.

The Commonwealth Bank is the latest victim, warning customers today to ignore emails purporting to come from the bank and to closely guard personal account details.

ABA spokesman Tony Bourke says customers should always be careful but they are ultimately protected.

"There is no risk unless the customer discloses their details, including pin," Mr Bourke said.

"The practice to date has been that even those cases where customer have disclosed their details and have as a result lost moneys, banks have compensated them."
