Cyber Crime Hackers, cyber-vandals and computer virus spreaders will face up to 10 years jail under legislation to be introduced in South Australia.

It will also be illegal to modify computer data without permission, impair electronic communication, or possess a computer virus with the intention of committing a serious computer offence.

The South Australian Attorney-General Michael Atkinson says the legislation has been under preparation for months and is not in reaction to any particular event.

"Hacking, sending of viruses and pinging can cause enormous economic damage to Australian companies and individuals and it's important that the criminal law deal with it," Mr Atkinson said.

"Computers are so important to everything we do, nearly everything we do in society now that the criminal law must come up to date."
